Quality Teaching in Practice conference 2023: Celebrating 20 years of the QT Model
The second annual Quality Teaching in Practice (QTiP) conference celebrated two decades of the Quality Teaching (QT) Model at Newcastle City Hall on 29-30 May 2023.
One of the major highlights of the conference was a panel discussion which brought together the original architects of the QT Model – Associate Professor James Ladwig, Laureate Professor Jenny Gore, former ACARA CEO Rob Randall, former NSW and Commonwealth department of education executive Janet Davy – with current NSW Department of Education Secretary Murat Dizdar. The panel discussed the legacy of the Model and its ongoing impact in Australian schools.

A resounding success
More than 280 teachers, school leaders, researchers and policymakers from diverse educational backgrounds, came together to interrogate, discuss and celebrate quality teaching in its many forms. This community of dedicated, passionate educators contributed to furthering a vision for quality teaching for every student, every day.
Across the two-day conference, teachers, QTR Advisers and researchers presented more than 40 engaging sessions. Highlights included:
• Three enlightening keynotes by Jenny Gore, Nathan Towney and Dylan Wiliam 🔒
• A series of hands-on practical sessions led by the QTR Advisers on using the QT Model for teaching, assessment and programming
• Two thought-provoking panel discussions
• Dozens of school stories and research presentations
Attendees delved into the latest educational research, heard from schools about their QTR implementation journeys and how they use data to measure change, explored emerging trends, and learned effective strategies for enhancing teaching and learning experiences.

Returning to the home of Pedagogy in Practice
Newcastle City Hall holds special significance as the birthplace of QTiP’s precursor, Pedagogy in Practice (PiP). With PiP’s rich history, spanning four conferences from 2004 to 2007, Newcastle was the ideal place to celebrate the coming together of educators and policy makers and to highlight their valuable work and contributions to the education sector.
The PiP conferences were a key plank in the campaign to raise awareness of the new QT Model, developed by University of Newcastle researchers Jenny Gore and James Ladwig and launched by the NSW Department of Education in 2003.
