Empowering teachers to empower each other

Quality Teaching Rounds (QTR) is collaborative, pedagogy-focused professional development undertaken by groups of four teachers in professional learning communities (PLCs) who observe, analyse, and discuss each other’s lessons guided by the Quality Teaching (QT) Model.

Backed by more than a decade of rigorous research, QTR is demonstrated to have transformative positive effects for schools, teachers and students.

QTR works for all teachers – primary, secondary, tertiary, across all subjects and faculties, and regardless of your experience level. The Model and Rounds approach have also been successfully applied to improve assessment practice and the development of high-quality units of work.

Strengthening Induction through QTR

The Strengthening Induction through QTR initiative is a four-year partnership between the Australian Government and the University of Newcastle to provide 1,600 Australian teachers the opportunity to participate in the award-winning QTR professional development program completely free of charge*.

This initiative, funded by the Australian Government as part of the National Teacher Workforce Action Plan, specifically aims to support early career teachers across Australia, by connecting early career teachers with experienced colleagues within their school community.

Already, more than 230 schools and 1,000 teachers nationwide have joined the initiative, reporting:

  • Reduced teacher burnout
  • Greater wellbeing and retention
  • Increased confidence in classroom practice
  • Improved behaviour management strategies

All participating teachers access a free QTR workshop (valued at $950 per person) as well as a range of other implementation and mentoring supports.

Principal workshop

In addition to the free QTR workshop, school leaders are invited to a free 90-minute workshop led by Distinguished Laureate Professor Jenny Gore AM. The workshop provides an overview of the initiative’s objectives and methodology, followed by a hands-on activity with one of our QT Advisers to deepen understanding of the QT Model and QTR process.

Participation in QTR is completely free of charge for eligible teachers, thanks to funding from the Australian Government under the National Teacher Workforce Action Plan.

Schools and teachers not participating in the Strengthening Induction project can still attend QTR workshops. These two-day sessions equip teachers and school leaders with the knowledge and skills to implement QTR effectively. Standard costs are $950, with a 10% discount available to QT Academy members and NSW Department of Education staff.

All Australian schools are eligible, provided at least 50 per cent of the teachers who come into the project are in their first three years of teaching. Schools form professional learning communities (PLC) of four teachers, which can be within the same school or across different schools using the QTR Digital platform. Teachers attend a free, two-day QTR workshop (valued at $950 per person), available both face-to-face and online. They will then engage in QTR within their schools or via the QTR Digital platform.

Teachers will be asked to complete two short, online surveys before and after participating in QTR. A small subset of teachers and principals will be asked to participate in interviews.

QTR supports teachers in meeting the APST by fostering deep analysis of teaching practice, collaborative professional learning, and reflection. Through lesson observation and discussion in PLCs, teachers:

  • Strengthen professional knowledge (Standards 1 & 2) by understanding how students learn and how to develop engaging learning activities with sufficient challenge, support and relevance.
  • Enhance professional practice (Standards 3 & 4) by planning and implementing effective, engaging lessons and creative supportive learning environments.
  • Build professional engagement (Standard 6) through structured collegial discussions and collaborative professional learning focused on pedagogy.

Our QT workshops address the following Standards:

  • QT Rounds workshop – 10 hours: 2, 2.1, 3.1, 3.3, 4.1, 6.2, 6.3
  • QT: Enhancing assessment practice – 5 hours: 1, 5.1, 6.2, 6.3
  • QT: Creating engaging units of work – 6 hours: 1.2, 2.2, 2.3, 6.3
