Strengthening Induction through QTR

Delivering free professional development for Australian teachers 

The Strengthening Induction initiative is a four-year partnership between the Australian Government and the University of Newcastle to provide 1,600 Australian teachers the opportunity to participate in the award-winning Quality Teaching Rounds (QTR) professional development program for free. 

Research shows QTR improves teaching quality and student achievement as well as teacher morale, confidence, and job satisfaction and retention. 

Teachers who have participated in the initiative to date have reported reduced burnout and improved teaching efficacy and confidence in classroom practice and behaviour management strategies.

Support for early career teachers

This initiative, funded by the Australian Government as part of the National Teacher Workforce Action Plan, specifically aims to support early career teachers across Australia. More than 700 teachers have already participated since the initiative commenced in Term 3, 2023. 

QTR fosters a collaborative environment where teachers learn from each other. Early career teachers form professional learning communities with their experienced colleagues to observe and analyse teaching practice using the QT Model. 

All participating teachers access a free QTR professional development workshop (valued at $950 per person) as well as a range of other implementation and mentoring supports. 

Effective teacher induction: Insights from a national program of research

The QT Academy hosted a webinar by Laureate Professor Jenny Gore AM in March 2025 which explored the evidence behind the most effective induction practices in Australian schools. In the webinar Jenny detailed the national induction research and policy landscape, before outlining new research from the University of Newcastle on the state of induction in Australian schools.

Jenny also shared findings from the first 18 months of the Strengthening induction through Quality Teaching Rounds project. Qualitative and quantitative evidence collected to date has found that both beginning and experienced teachers have reduced burnout and improved teaching efficacy and confidence in classroom practice and behaviour management strategies following their collaboration through Quality Teaching Rounds.

Eligibility

All Australian schools are eligible, provided at least 50 per cent of the teachers who come into the project are in their first three years of teaching. Schools form professional learning communities of four teachers, which can be within the same school or across different schools using the QTR Digital platform. 

What’s involved

Teachers attend a free, two-day Quality Teaching Rounds workshop (valued at $935 per person), available both face-to-face and online. They will then engage in QTR within their schools or via the QTR Digital platform. 

Teachers will be asked to complete two short, online surveys before and after participating in QTR. A small subset of teachers and principals will be asked to participate in interviews.

All participating teachers receive free registration for a Quality Teaching Rounds workshop. Research shows that QTR participation boosts teaching quality, teacher morale, teacher efficacy and student achievement. 

Connecting early career teachers with experienced colleagues through QTR enhances school culture, job satisfaction and collegiality. Experienced teachers and those with mentoring responsibilities gain better tools to support ongoing teacher induction. 

School leaders are invited to a free 90-minute workshop led by Laureate Professor Jenny Gore AM. The workshop provides an overview of the initiative’s objectives and methodology, followed by a hands-on activity with one of our QT Advisers to deepen understanding of the QT Model and QTR process.
