QTR Digital
An alternative way to engage
In keeping with the Academy’s commitment to equity, we have developed QTR Digital, an approach for undertaking Quality Teaching Rounds online. More teachers being able to access and take part in this high-impact online professional development helps teachers stay connected with one another (in some cases across networks of schools), builds collaboration and a positive school culture, and will ultimately lead to better learning outcomes for more students.
QTR Digital is perfect for teachers and leaders who:
- are in remote communities or small schools
- have limited access to casual teaching staff
- want to collaborate with peers from other schools or areas
- need greater flexibility in QTR implementation
- are employed casually and looking for powerful PD
Flexible, online professional development training
All the QTR processes can be undertaken online. Participating teachers have the flexibility to negotiate scheduling with members of their professional learning community.
The two-day QTR foundational workshop is the starting point for QTR Digital. During the workshop, teachers receive guidance on how to use a combination of video recording, web conferencing and digital file sharing to complete Rounds, ensuring maximum impact for teachers and students.
QTR Digital: The results
The Teachers and Teaching Research Centre at the University of Newcastle undertook research which shows that quality of teaching is the most important in-school factor affecting student outcomes.
To date, three randomised controlled trials (RCTs) investigating the impact of QTR on student achievement have achieved positive results. These trials have demonstrated significant improvement in both reading and mathematics, from both researcher-led and trainer-led QTR workshops, through face-to-face and QTR Digital engagement, and when independently evaluated by the University of Queensland.
- 2019 RCT – 2 months’ additional growth in maths for students in years 3 and 4.
- 2021 QTR Digital RCT – 2 months’ additional in growth reading for students in years 3 – 6.
- 2022 QLD cohort 2 RCT – 3 months’ additional growth in reading for students in years 5 and 6.
