Powerful pedagogies: Building on what we know from the science of learning and development

This session will discuss the shifts in practice associated with our growing understanding of the Science of Learning and Development and the ways in which powerful learning for teachers can advance individual and collective efficacy – which in turn supports teacher motivation and retention, as well as student success.

Wednesday 8:45am-9.40am AEST

Jay McTighe

Experienced educator and author of ‘Understanding by Design’

Teaching is a means to an end

Effective pedagogy has the power to engage students in meaningful learning to develop foundational knowledge, basic skills, and conceptual understandings. However, there is no one “best” way to teach. In this Keynote address, Jay will use a “backward design” construct to explore essential questions related to the power of pedagogy, including: What are the long-term goals of a modern education? What is most worth understanding in all that we teach? How will we know that our students really understand and can apply their learning in meaningful ways? How do varied learning goals impact how we teach?
